Scarlet Bowman

Scarlet is an upcoming sophomore at UCSC majoring in Community Studies. She is currently studying Freedom, Native American history, expansion + connection, and the impact of the Patriarchy (deconstruction/destruction).

Scarlet wishes to help people come together and love through intersectional-communities. She believes art is the best way to expand our minds and hearts, and is so happy to be contributing to Hogfish’s productions and decolonizing efforts this summer, as art and activism is her favorite combo! Hogfish’s work, broadening perspectives for social acceptance, particularly through the power of art, which explores concepts and emotions beyond words— is the type of work she is drawn to do on earth. Scarlet hopes to bring internal, communal, and lasting change towards a more sustainable, peaceful reality!

Katie Irwin (MECA&D FEllow)

Katie Irwin (they/them) is a storyteller living in Portland, Maine. They recently moved back to Maine after living in Aotearoa New Zealand for three years, where they became involved in non-indigenous solidarity for indigenous land sovereignty. They graduated from Salt Institute for Documentary Studies last year and are passionate about storytelling through film, audio and creating communal experiences for connection through the sharing of story. They are excited and honored to be part of the Hogfish’s community of artists this summer.

Janet Newman

Janet Newman is a student at Providence College studying English and Film. She has written as an opinion writer for The Cowl and is eager to establish a column for Theater, Dance, and Film in the upcoming school year.

Her primary focus is helping to build an artistic sanctuary and body of work to restore a healthier balance between our planet, the stories we tell, and how we live. Her enthusiasm stems from the opportunity to explore how Hogfish’s initiatives positively impact the community as it closely relates to her background growing up in Maine.

Janet is deeply appreciative of the chance to work with the organization and is committed to upholding Hogfish’s values as she strives to create a better environment for all.
